BUILDING COMMITTEE
First Baptist Employs Design-Build Company

In the spring of 2004, our church elected a Building Committee. This committee was given the responsibility to review the master plan adopted by our church in 1993, recommend changes/updates and study the need for additional space. In May 2004, the Building Committee invited MG&A, a design build company that specializes in developing building plans for churches, Wayne Myrick, CEO of MG&A, and his team, to begin the process of studying First Baptist Church, our community, and the city. In June MG&A presented their findings.
SURROUNDING COMMUNITY
  • Is experiencing the largest private revitalization in the U.S. that includes single family homes, garden homes, luxury apartments, upscale shopping areas, and apartment housing for university students.
  • The establishment of new residential housing and commercial development modeled in the North Loop Development Plan just a few minutes away from First Baptist Church. These two developments represented approximately 10,000 people moving to our area.
  • In addition, the city is building and East/West freeway that will provide a new high speed corridor from Southwest Lubbock to First Baptist Church.
YOUNG & GROWING CITY
  • The median age in Lubbock is 30.6 years of age, the US median is 36.1.
  • The projected 2008 growth for Lubbock county is 267,313 people.
1998 TO 2004 OUR CHURCH
  • Grew at a 3-year historical average of 6% in worship from 1,120 people to 2,119 people per Sunday.
  • Grew at a 3-year historical average of 3% in Sunday school from 1,605 people to 1,837* people per Sunday.
*First Baptist launched a new church and mission that is not statistically reflected in this figure
  • Our 11:00 a.m. worship service is approaching capacity regularly.
  • Our Sunday school space in near capacity, approximately 25 rooms left to begin new classes.
  • We have space at our 8:15 a.m. worship service, but the time is not optimum for reaching new people.
COMMITTEE QUESTIONS
Based on this current information and facts, what should we do? If we are to continue to meet the expectation of our mission statement, "to know Christ and to make Him known in the heart of Lubbock and beyond;" if we are to continue to be a developing Great Commission Church; if we desire to have a significant impact in our city by reaching lost and unenlisted people, then we must consider providing the multiple use of Sunday school space and multiple age-appropriate worship services and build a facility to support the program and ministries. In the summer of 2004 the Buildig Committee began the process of communicating the vision and possibilities. in August, at our annual Sunday school leadership training, the Sunday school leaders were the first to hear the vision and opportunity. Later that month the Deacon Fellowship heard the presentation with Q&A following and voted to preceed with planning. Next, the Building Committee hosted various age division presentations and Q&A throughout the following weeks. On Sunday August 22, a town hall meeting was held during the evening worship service. The church heard the vision with Q&A following the presentation. Sunday, September 12, the church voted to proceed with the design plans that would determine the cost of the project.
