Identity theft is the fastest growing crime in America, affecting approximately 7-10 million people every single year. Simply stated, identity theft is the utilization of an individual’s personal information, or their actual identity for personal gain. Frighteningly it occurs without you even knowing it and once you do become aware, in most cases the damage has already been done.
While this kind of identity theft can wreak havoc and bring about inconveniences that can take months to undo, there is another form of identity theft of which most are unaware. It’s a type of identity theft that affects 43% of the U.S. population—the 129 million people who claim to attend church at least once a month—and chillingly, results in damages of eternal consequence. The spirit of consumerism and radical individualism that dominates our culture has infiltrated and stolen the identity of the church and replaced it with a spirit that is antithetical to its biblical description; to a degree that in the minds of most of her members the significance of the church and the urgency
of her eternal message has been diminished; to the point that it no longer requires the best of what we have to offer; that half-hearted efforts will suffice.
Because time is too short and eternity too long, we must desperately long for the recovery of the churches identity. After months of personal study, I’m convinced that an in-depth expository series through Paul’s Ephesian
letter is the means by which
this can be best accomplished.
It is my prayer that as we hear
God’s word regarding the church,
and what it means to be a part
of his church, the body of
Christ, that our spirits might be renewed that we might be more passionate and effective in our witness to the world and to one another.
